In 1949 office space in Liverpool was hard to find and the firm started in a small suite of offices in Hackins Hey (named after John Hacking, through whose croft enclosed by hedges the narrow street was laid out). At that time (the 17th Century) Liverpool had just 18 streets. The firm grew and took over more of the premises at 16-18 Hackins Hey
The firm expanded but in the late 1970’s it moved to what were the former NEMS offices in Whitechapel from where Brian Epstein ventured to the nearby Cavern Club. The Beatles signed a contract with him in those offices in the early 1960’s. The redevelopment of that building resulted in a short move to the next block in Whitechapel and occupies offices in what was the former Rushworths’ Building: another link with Beatles History – the store supplying Paul McCartney’s 14th birthday present from his father (a trumpet) and John Lennon and George Harrison with Gibson guitars in 1962 .
Whitechapel was originally known as Frog Lane – the name change occurred in the l8th century when there was the fashion to use London street names – and was built over a portion of the bed of the Pool. There were frogs on the marshy ground which ran along its entire length and boats being built there.
Today, Whitechapel is bustling in the heart of the City Centre and E. Rex Makin & Co’s well-appointed offices could not be more conveniently located.
We offer early morning / lunch / evening appointments and away from the office and home visits.
